Congratulations, President Obama…

… and now it’s time to get your daughters Malia and Sasha that puppy you promised them!

When PetTheVote first emailed Barack Obama asking for his stance on animal rights and animal welfare, we also encouraged him to adopt a dog from a shelter when the time came for a new Presidential Puppy.  Perhaps he took our advice to heart?

Today Obama announced that the family’s new puppy will indeed be adopted from a shelter!

Obama told reporters Friday that his mention on election night of getting a puppy for Sasha and Malia had “generated more interest” on his Web site than any other topic.

He said, “We have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic so it has to be hypoallergenic.”

Obama also said there were a number of breeds that were hypoallergenic, but that the family’s preference is to adopt a dog from a shelter.

Obama added: “But obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So whether we’re going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household.”

What sort of allergy-friendly dog would you recommend for the new White House?

Those of us who work to support animal shelters know that dogs of all possible breeds — including purebreds and “designer” dogs — can be found at shelters.   Just take a look at PetFinder.com; and you’ll find dogs of all ages, colors, and breeds who need a good home.

The PetTheVote family just used the brand-new Change.gov website to let Barack Obama know that dogs of all kinds can be found at shelters, and that our vision for America includes the new First Family publicizing their adoption of a shelter dog and encouraging all Americans to adopt pets from shelters or rescue groups rather than pet stores or backyard breeders.

Join us in letting Barack Obama know that the new puppy in the White House should be adopted from an animal shelter or rescue group!

The Humane Society has put together a thank-you card for Barack, Michelle, Malia, and Sasha Obama to thank them for announcing they want to adopt a dog. Click the link to add your name to help thank them!

Annabelle’s Election Plea

We here at PetTheVote have been biting our nails (and our chew toys) in anticipation of tomorrow’s election. We’re up late tonight checking last minute polls and cleaning up the house in preparation for having some friends over tomorrow evening to watch the election results with us.

We got an email tonight that we thought was important enough to share right away:

My name is Annabelle. I am an American Pit Bull Terrier and I approve of our family’s vote for OBAMA!

Annabelle for Obama

I currently live in Pacifica, California, just outside San Francisco on Hwy 1 with my owner, Maureen.

I am a Hurricane Katrina survivor. I know what it was like to live poor. Until I was rescued, I never knew what it was like to not live in a backyard. What has the current administration done to help my former family and friends in re-building New Orleans? It’s been three years, folks. People should not still be homeless.

There are other things my humans tell me that are scary, like McPain’s VP nominee paying her constituents to KILL animals in Alaska! That’s not right. I vote NO against all that.

I don’t understand all the fighting around this Prop 8. Dogs don’t care if they have two moms or two dads or 1 mom/1 dad or just 1 mom or just 1 dad. Barack Obama doesn’t either. Why should you? I wish everyone would love like us pooches. Please support LOVE. Barack Obama does.

My mom also tells me that some families can’t afford health insurance to take care of their kids? I have pet insurance in case I get sick or if I got hit by a car or something like that. I am lucky because my family doesn’t have to worry about money to get me feeling a-ok again. Or am I? If the republicans keep running things business as usual, maybe my pet insurance company will go belly up? Will the government bail out my pet insurance company? McCain’s $5K annual per family healthcare allocation will do NOTHING to change and better the health care system for humans.

I went to the polls today with my mom.

Annabelle for Obama

I told Mom I couldn’t wear my Obama tee because I could get arrested for “electioneering.” (That means YOU DON’T GET TO VOTE if you are wearing anything that displays either candidate’s name.) We still told people why we were there, when asked. I am a dog whose breed faces discrimination every day. Heck, McCain didn’t even respond to petthevote.com’s inquiry on his position on animal rights. That tells me he ain’t got any. We aren’t important. I want someone like Barack Obama as my watchdog in Washington. He’s voted down BSL, he’s voted for stiffer penalties for dog fighting, and he’s voted against other forms of animal abuse.

Barack Obama is everything that is admired in an American Pit Bull Terrier: Strength — Confidence —- Courage — Intelligence — Loyalty — Zest for Life — Driven.

Let’s get Obama & a Shelter Dog in the White House!

Annabelle, PetTheVote endorses Barack Obama, for a lot of the same reasons as you do. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts!

Everyone, get out and vote tomorrow!

Leo for Obama!

Leo Beastdog says:

After all the reading I’ve done over the past few days about Barack Obama’s voting record on animal rights and animal welfareespecially the way he voted against allowing breed-specific legislation in Illinois — I’ve decided that my humans should vote for Barack Obama!

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that that cutie pit bull Sally likes Obama too. ;)

Barack Obama is Against Breed-Specific Legislation

Leo Beastdog says:

Breed-specific legislation (the awful, stupid laws that do things like ban dogs that resemble “pit bulls”, because some people believe that dogs that look a certain way are “vicious”) is not an issue you’ll hear about on the Presidential campaign trail. My humans tell me that BSL is a state, county, or city issue rather than a federal one, so Presidents don’t need to think about it much.

It made me (and my humans) very happy to find out that Barack Obama voted for a bill that stopped Illinois cities from enacting breed-specific legislation!

When he was in the Illinois State Senate in May 2003, Barack Obama voted for …
